MAA 2014 –THE RULES

Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara and the Italian Institute for Foreign Trade are pleased to announce this year’s MARBLE ARCHITECTURAL AWARDS (MAA) competition as part of their programme of activities to promote natural stone and related industries.

The initiative intends to recognize the value of those designers  who contribute to improve the marble culture in the world through the example of their own works showing a relevant use of the stone products

1-The”M.A.A.2014” is open to all registered  architects, designers and planners. Project may be entered by property owners, developers or whoever has played an important role in the completion of the project (stone suppliers, stone layers, technical consultants, etc.), although the awards shall be given exclusively to the designer or design team.

2-Entries may be any work of architecture such as buildings, multipurpose complexes, interiors, urban landscape, villas, apartments etc., completed in North America ( Canada, USA,. Mexico)between 1st January 2000 and 31st December 2013.

Entries must be the work of architects, planners or designers registered with a nationally recognised professional body.

“Completed” means that the works must be “substantially completed” as defined in the standard laws governing construction in the country where the projects have been executed.

The natural stone used in the project may be from Italy and/or from any other country and it may be fabricated, supplied or laid by companies in Italy or any other country.

3-A relevant use of natural stone in the work is requested as condition to enter the work.

4- The competition is divided into three sections.

A maximum of three projects may be submitted which in turn may be  submitted to each of three sections, provided that this is clearly stated and the relevant documentation required is included for each section.

The three sections are:

Section 1external facings in private or in public residential or non-residential buildings.

Section 2 interior design in private or public residential or non-residential buildings.

Section 3 urban landscape areas or communal areas in residential, commercial or office districts.

ELIGIBILITY AND AUTHORSHIP

- Entries have to be any work of architecture such as buildings, multipurpose complexes, interiors, urban landscape, villas, apartments etc., completed in North America ( Canada, USA,. Mexico)between 1st January 2000 and 31st December 2013.

- Entries must be the work of architects, planners or designers registered with a nationally recognised professional body.

- Authorship of each submitted project shall be supported by the necessary proof. 

Authorship will be determined according the architect’s contribution to the project submitted.

The submitting architects may be a member of a design team, although not necessarily the head of the team. If the architect is not the sole author, all those who have made a substantial contribution to the design of the project must be given credit in the submission, regardless of their professional discipline.

In the case of building complexes, the designer submitting the project (or portion thereof) shall offer detailed proof of authorship of each portion of the project.

- Entries must be submitted as specified by ICE and IMM or they will automatically be eliminated.

All correspondence should be marked “Marble Architectural Awards North America 2014”.

The organizers recommend to return the entry forms no later than 31st January 2014, in order to allow  due time for the preparation of the submission binder.

A submission binder and the related directions for composing it   will be provided for each entrant by the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara S.p.A. upon receipt of the entry forms with an entry number to identify the participant,.

Completed documentation should be returned either to the local Italian Trade Commission (ICE) or to the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine S.p.A. for judging no later than 28th February 2014.

Information should be typed. The forms marked a), b), b1) should be completed with care since this is the only information that the Jury will have on client requirements and architectural solutions, especially technical solutions concerning the use of stone materials.

IMAGES

A minimum of 4 ( maximum 12) black and white or glossy colour images should be provided for each section. These should include two general views and two details showing the use of the stone materials. Each slide should be identified with the entry number and another consecutive number assigned by the participant

Rights to photographs must be cleared for publication.

PLANS

A  site plan should be provided showing the project and its immediate surroundings. A floor plan or plans and one or more sections should be provided to adequately illustrate the project.

Plans may be drawn on any scale in any medium; the scale must be indicated graphically.

Rights to plans must be cleared for publication.

N.b. All the visual documentation must be provided (preferably) in TIFF format  and in JPG format

at high definition (not less than 300 dpi).

The images have to be in large size ( minimum size 8” x 12”).

JURY

Entries for the “M.A.A. 2014” competition shall be judged by a panel of eminent persons from the architectural world

AWARDS-COLLATERAL EVENTS

All participants must be prepared to come  personally to Italy should their projects be awarded prizes.

The winners will be notified of the Jury’s decisions and invited to personally collect their awards at the official prize-giving Ceremony held in Carrara, Italy at the organiser’s expense.

Award-winners and those receiving special mentions will be asked to prepared two 40” x 40” exhibit panels to be displayed at the MAA 2014 exhibition.

The designers of the award-winning projects will be asked to make detailed presentations of theirs projects.

Seminars will be organised so that they may illustrate the design processes and special features of their projects.

 

PUBLICATION

The submitter must clear all drawings and images included in the submission binders to allow for their reproduction for ICE and IMM publicity and articles concerning the MAA competition. Permission must also be given to microfilm submissions and copy material for the IMM files. Entrants are responsible for any royalties, copyrights or photograph fees. In ceding the copyright clearance form, it is understood that ICE and IMM thereby acquires the right to make use of this material, at its own discretion, to announce and publicise the Awards and educate the public in architectural design. Credits lines and copyright notice (if any) will be used on drawings and photographs published by ICE and IMM.

ICE and IMM, however, will not be held responsible for failure on part of others to do so.

TIME SCHEDULE

The organisers recommend that the entry forms should be sent by e-mail, fax, or registered post to arrive by 31st January 2014 at: Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara.

Submission in binders must be sent to arrive no later than 28th February 2014 at the Internazionale Marmi e Macchine Carrara S.p.A. or the local Italian Trade Commission (ICE) offices. The organisers, however, reserve the right to admit late entries, provided that the binders reach the IMM no later than 2 days before the jury commences.
